My daughters attested me a weird relationship with graveyards because they were a constant in all visits to new places, and I had to learn to live with that. But in my eyes the way we we deal with death says a lot about our society, also about cultural differences and development in aesthetics. So I never miss an opportunity to visit a graveyard. And for a photographer, these are very often real treasure chests.
I like to visit and often photograph in graveyards as well, Markus. I enjoy reading the markers and often try to connect the dates on the markers with my limited knowledge of history to make guesses about the events this person may have seen or been part of. Then there are the markers or headstones themselves, and I wonder about the significance of their size or design, or even the placement of the graves — there are good and bad graveyard „neighborhoods“ just like with homes. If that makes me strange, I have no problem owning it. 😏
A graveyard also offers a very special way of „grounding“, Earl: Imagining the passing of times and lives can help to see the own position in life much clearer. But there’s a great number of people that shy away from the certainty of mortality, and that certainly is a reason to feel uneasy on a cemetery. Also in that way, feeling easy on a cemetery can seem strange to others.
