yesterday I was on a excursion with environmentalists and forest wardens / officials to see the development of the protective forests in the Bavarian alps. The first image shows a classical working forest, state of the art 4 decades ago – all trees of the same species and age, densely planted to maximise economic yield but at the same time extremely vulnerable by storms and changing climate.
the second image is what the foresters now try to achieve: diverse in all aspects, stable, CO² absorbing, still with profit, but hopefully future proof. We can only press our thumbs that they will succeed, otherwise many roads and settlements are in danger, if the forests can not provide their protective functions against landslides, avalanches and flooding
