Shadow of a small plant?

A bonsai beech, much smaller than the shadow created by the morning sun suggests. My father started it from a wild seedling probably 20 years ago, and I found it in the garden under bushes and a heap of leaves – it is a wonder that it survived. Now I am in charge.
