According to the Bavarian State Association for Local History Preservation, mortuary boards were widespread in the Alemannic and Bavarian regions during the 19th century; today, they are found primarily in the Bavarian Forest, as well as in the Chiemgau and Rupertiwinkel regions…
Originally, the body, wrapped in a cloth, was laid out on a funeral board in the living room with the feet facing the door. In the Chiemgau and Rupertiwinkel regions, a bundle of straw was placed under the head of the deceased and a rosary in their hands. The deceased were then carried on the funeral board via the funeral platforms to the respective church.
