Almost Graveyard Peace

This image was taken on the first and unforgettable evening (better: morning) of last year’s business trip to Venice. Rule-obeying civil servants that my colleague and me are, we took public transport from the airport to our hotel in spite of the plane’s arrival well past 22:00 hours. It turned out that the night line didn’t make the direct trip to Piazza St. Marco, but instead went across the lagoon to Lido first. Long story short, we arrived after a final strong walk through empty streets, following our sense of orientation and a quite unusable print of a g****e map, in our hotel at 1:30 in the morning. But I was motivated enough to take some pictures on the way.

    Hmmmmm….I think this is one to file under the „lemons/lemonade“ heading. Which you’ve managed quite nicely.

      Yes, that’s why I didn’t complain in the end. And why I was glad to carry only a MFT camera. No comparison in terms of weight to my DSLR

    lieber markus, dieser marsch und dein unermüdliches fotografieren haben sich aber gelohnt, denn solch ein bild kann bestimmt nicht mancher von venedig zeigen, leere stühle und ein paar einzelne nachtgeister, sonst kein mensch, keine tauben, kein schmutz, nichts auf den strassen … und das in vernedig, wo sonst die hölle los ist.

      Ja, Walter, und aus eigenem Antrieb wäre ich um diese Zeit nicht mehr unterwegs gewesen. Wobei Oktober schon viel besser war als die Sommermonate – kaum ist man aus den In-Vierteln raus, wird es schon erträglicher.

      Thanks, Earl! I’ve seen Venice already decades ago, and it is still intriguing. The absence of cars alone is something that makes it really special for an ordinary city dweller, and the softness of the colors especially on overcast days is simply charming.

    Die Nacht war noch nie allein zum Schlafen da. Ich bin gerne nachts unterwegs. Das besondere Licht zieht mich immer wieder hinaus. Und das hast Du ganz wunderbar eingefangen, Markus. Ein wahrhaft schönes Portrait dieser Stadt.

      Florian, als für einen gestresstern Familienvater entwickelt hat Schlaf eine ganz schön hohe Priorität. Aber Du hast natürlich recht, die photographischen Möglichkeiten sind nicht zu verachten – und sie bieten auch eine gewisse Exklusivität. Venedig bei Tag und in buntesten Farben knipsen ach so viele!
