On the Basin Ground

Wandering the basin ground on a late Sunday afternoon showed patterns and subject matter otherwise invisible. The time- and area-wise proximity of the images of course suggests a quadriptych, but regarding the squares I was hesitant at first. In the end my preference for strict formalism won over, I found it the less distracting way to present those images. And I also printed them as single images in 7″x7″ on Baryta paper, which leads to a fine viewing experience as this is a good image size to be hand held.

      Thanks, Tom. Recently, I am investing more energy both in getting images printed – which in the beginning showed me mercilessly minor flaws that I wouldn’t have seen on the screen – and presenting/arranging images.

    Das Quadratformat gibt den Bildern eine kompositionelle Ausgewogenheit, durch die das Motiv im Geviert des Rahmens festgefügt erscheint; Spuren, Abdrücke, die von der einstmaligen Anwesenheit eines Lebewesens Zeugnis ablegen; Risse, die das Augenmerk auf die Schönheit von zufälligen Oberflächenstrukturen und -texturen lenken; und dazu das unverwüstliche Grün, die Über-Lebenskraft der Natur: Alles lädt den Betrachter dazu ein, über das Fortschreiten der Zeit in stillgestellten Bildern nachzudenken.
    Ein sehr feines Quadriptychon.

      Uwe, Bilder müssen sich auf einmal zusätzlich ganz anderen Regeln unterwerfen, wenn man versucht sie zu arrangieren. Die Spannung zwischen dem sehr ruhigen Quadrat als Grundform und natürlicher Unregelmäßigkeit, Wuchs und Organischem funktioniert hier wirklich gut. Für die nächste Gruppenausstellung werde ich versuchen, diese Bilder leicht abgesetzt auf weiß lasierter OSB-Platte zu präsentieren.

      Thanks, Cedric! In two weeks time we have a group exhibition of our local photographers‘ group, and I plan to present those images on a white glazed or thinly varnished OSB, letting the structure shine through and mounting the prints with a small distance from the background board – I could imagine this emphasizes the photographs better than presenting them in glass frames.

          I hope so, Cedric. It’s definitely not of the eye-catching variety, but for lovers of subtle shapes and colors it should give encouragement to view.
