Besides all, this image is also a contribution to/comment on the landscapist’s current post titled „the art of war / what the camera cannot interpret“. Admittedly I have great difficulties/reservations with most kind of war photography and even more with war painting: The first one often is (and should be) that graphic that it’s hard to bear, while the second one is rarely graphic enough (Least you ask: Goya’s is). And all too often both crafts/arts have been commissioned to manipulate, to paint heroism where suffering and dying the most miserable death was all there was.
Most certainly I am biased, simple-minded, a European whimp, but what Eddie Adams, Nick Ut and James Nachtwey show of war is all that needs to be shown – and seen. Besides that, I’d sing with Pete Seeger „Ain’t gonna study war no more“.
